For the grade 7 learners at Silverton Primary school, report marks are no longer a scary thought. This is thanks to their recently established Mad Geeks Tutor club, run by grade 7’s, for grade 7’s – to assist learners whose marks needed improvement.
The club, a result of Silverton Primary’s debut involvement in the national Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP), empowers grade 7 and grade 10 learners to be proactive in solving or decreasing challenges they face in their schools and communities.
Problems were identified, scrutinized and filtered until the group decided that their low marks is what concerns them most and the Mad Geeks Tutor Club was born.
At the tutor club, grade 7 learners are trained to be tutors to their fellow class mates. “I love Mad Geeks. This my family, man. Here we study hard to work hard,” Thatho Motsi a Mad Geek member said.
At the recent provincial competition in Cullinan, Silverton Primary’s Mad Geeks Tutor Club walked away with first prize. They will next compete in the national competition that will take place in Parys, Free State.
