Timely tax returns make life easier for Sars

Sars has announced that one million income tax returns submissions had been received by Monday, 20 July.

Barely a month has elapsed since the opening of the 2015 tax season and the revenue service has scored a million. The SA revenue service (Sars) has announced one million income tax returns submissions had been received by Monday, 20 July.

Sars says in a statement this is a major improvement from the previous tax season. At the same time in 2014, only 18.79% of eligible taxpayers had submitted their returns. In 2015, that figure stands at 23.07%.

Since the beginning of the tax season on 1 July 2015, when taxpayers could submit their 2015 tax returns, 610 067 (60.96%) of taxpayers have used eFiling to complete and submit their returns, while 388 058 (38.78%) of taxpayers opted to file at Sars branches. Only 0.27% ( 2661) of taxpayer opted to submit manually via mail or drop-box.

“This achievement sends out a positive compliance message by taxpayers and their confidence in Sars. On behalf of Sars I would like to thank taxpayers for their willingness to meet their tax obligations and responsibilities. This has certainly made our job easier this year,” said Sars commissioner Tom Moyane.

The deadline for taxpayers who submit their tax returns manually by mail or by drop-box is 30 September. All non-provisional taxpayers have until 27 November. Provisional taxpayers who submit returns via eFiling have until 29 January 2016.
