79 Streetlights not working
Seventy nine streetlight not working and a few stolen in some areas of the west of Pretoria.
About 79 streetlights have been found to be out of order in Proclamation Hill and Pretoria West.
During the past weekend, AfriForum neighbourhood watch went around these two areas to mark streetlights not working.
The ribbon project has work for AfriForum before when they tied ribbons around streetlights that are not working in Danville as a marking for the Tshwane metro to see which streetlights need to be repaired.
“The dark streets is a big concern for all of us, it jeopardises our safety as well as the people of the neighbourhood, and they become easy targets for criminals,” said Hannelie Oberholzer from AfriForum Pretoria West branch.
She said house robberies are a huge problem in these areas already, and with the streetlights not working it worsens the problem even more.
Oberholzer said 15 streets in these areas are affected. Out of all of them, 29 streetlights in Quagga Road are not working and five streetlight poles have been stolen.
“In WF Nkomo Road, between Quagga Road and Transoranje Street, 11 streetlight poles have been stolen,” said Oberholzer.
The AfriForum Pretoria West branch said they would like the metro to repair the streetlights to make the streets safer for everybody.
“We would appreciate it if the metro can sort this problem out urgently,” Oberholzer said.
AfriForum neighbourhood watch does street patrols in the area and it came to their attention the non-working lights have been out of order for a long time now.
