Lions beat Titans to lift eKasi trophy
Lions win by four wickets to claim bragging rights at the eKasi challenge in Mamelodi.
The Unlimited Titans led by former Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel lost to the Bizhub Highveld Lions at the Mamelodi cricket oval on Wednesday.
The Bizhub Highveld Lions won the ODI match by four wickets thanks to a brilliant knock from Qaasim Adams.
The Titans opened the innings looking for a good start but Aiden Markram’s run-out in the fifth over put the Titans on 10-1. Next to follow was Theunis de Bruyn, he was bowled LBW by Sean Jamison on 6.
Henry Davids, who looked superb for the Titans was outdone by a brilliant Eddie Leie delivery as he failed to connect. Davids was bowled for 34 with the Titans on 59-3 in the 18th over.
The Titans innings was restored by Adams and Albie Morkel as they saw the Titans over 200 in the 44th over. Adams however, was unable to get to his 93 as Shaylen Pillay bowled him out with a perfect yorker.
Titans eventually finished on 244 in their 50 overs, setting the Lions up with a 245 target to win.
The Lions started like a house on fire with both Stephen Cook and Rassie van der Dussen hitting boundaries left, right and centre. They put together a partnership of 64 before Van der Dussen was sent packing by the bowling of Lungi Ngidi, caught by Mangaliso Mosehle. Cook went on to reach his half-century but was caught later on 61 when he tried to pull Ethy Mbhalati.
The Lions continued to build on the momentum and in the end wicketkeeper batsman Thami Tsolekile saw the team over the line with his unbeaten 44.
The win ensured the Lions holding on to the eKasi challenge trophy for the third time.
Aaron Phangiso of the Lions said the game was fantastic and thanked the spectators for coming in numbers to support the event.
