The Currie Cup semi-finals and World Cup quarterfinals will definitely get the most attention from South African sports fans this weekend.
Butcheries and liquor stores in South Africa are probably already packed with enough supplies for this weekend. It is not only semi-final time for the Currie Cup series, but also quarter-final time for the rugby World Cup.
Rugby
The weekend is overloaded with knock-out rugby action, both at the World Cup in England and in the Currie Cup tournament in South Africa.
The action starts on Friday night in Pretoria, when the Blue Bulls will take on the WP in the first semi-final of this year’s Currie Cup competition. The game starts at 19:00 and according to the Blue Bulls Company there are still many tickets available. Visit bulls.ticketpro.co.za or The Loftus ticket office at the stadium.
On Saturday the Blue Bulls’ neighbors from across the Jukskei river will play in the second Currie Cup semi-final against the Free State Cheetahs. This game starts at 13:45 and will be played at Emirates Airline Park (Ellispark) in Johannesburg.
Later on Saturday Heyneke Meyer’s Springboks gets their turn in the first quarter final of this year’s world cup tournament. They will take on Wales at 17:00 (SA time) and this game takes place on Twickenham in London.
Cricket
The local Momentum one-day series started with some interesting results last weekend. This series will continue in the coming weekend and the attention of the people of Pretoria will be with the action at the games at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday and at the Wanderers on Sunday. The Titans will take on the Cape Cobras on Friday. This action starts at 14:00. On Sunday they play against the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers. This is as day-game and action will start at 10:00.
Meanwhile, the Proteas tour of India also continues. After India won the first ODI against South Africa, the team will have to come back on track as soon as possible if they want to win this series. The second ODI in this current series will be played on Wednesday, October 14 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, India. The action will start at 10:00 (SA time).
Athletics
The SABS Jacaranda City Challenge is a standard marathon of 42.2km. It is a moderate two-lapper through Pretoria’s CBD which starts at the SABS head office in Groenkloof. It is also a Comrades and a Two Oceans qualifier. The event includes a 21.1 half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. Walkers are welcome.
Medals will be awarded to all finishers and prizes to category winners. The 42.2km marathon and the 21.1km half marathon starts at 05:45, the 10km at 06:15 and the 5km fun run at 06:30.

Soccer
After the PSL postponed four games to a later date, that should have taken place this weekend, only one local team will still be in action in the PSL league in the next few days. Mamelodi Sundowns plays Polokwane City at the Lucas Moripe stadium on Sunday. The game starts at 15:30.
However, in the Telkom Knockout league, the students of AmaTuks will take on the mighty Orlando Pirates on Friday 16 October. The game starts at 20:00 and will be played in the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
