Bus service operates amid looming suspensions
The Tshwane bus service operated on Monday, even though drivers were suspended last week.
The Tshwane bus services were operating on Monday, after nearly 100 bus drivers were issued with notices of suspension last week, the Tshwane metro council said.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said 98 bus drivers and 41 employees were issued with the notices on Friday, after they were involved in an unprotected strike earlier this month.
Mashigo said on Monday, that there was no commotion or disturbances of bus services as anticipated by the metro.
“We initially thought the bus interruptions would commence on Monday morning, once the drivers clocked in. However, we are running the whole fleet.”
Drivers affiliated to the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) recently went on strike, refusing to accept cash for tickets. They contended that carrying cash exposed them to the risk of robbery.
Mashigo said Samwu would be meeting with the bus driver representatives on Monday morning.
“They might decide to strike,” he said.
