Open manhole ignored for months

There is now water running out of the manhole into the street with a very bad smell.

A dangerous open manhole in Pretoria West has now for four months been ignored by the Tshwane metro.

Resident Itumeleng Kgotsa said the hole on the corner of Vom Hagen and Rosse-Etta streets was reported to the metro months ago but nothing had been done about it.

“There is water coming out of the manhole and this is dangerous because it is open,” Kgotsa said.

“There is a school and an old age home near the manhole and we are afraid people might get hurt.”

He said things had gotten worse since he reported the manhole the first time.

“There is now water running out of the manhole into the street in front of our houses with a very bad smell. It is very unhygienic,” he said.

“The council has been singing on daily basis about the saving of water, yet they can’t attend to leaks when they are reported. It’s a very disturbing that water is being wasted here.”

Kgotsa said people in the metro were being paid to deal with such problems yet nothing was being done.

“Our perception is that we are undermined because our area is not of high class, but we pay for services like anyone else in Tshwane.”

An enquiry on the matter has been sent to the metro.
