No bail for ‘Gumtree baby-selling’ mom

The woman who allegedly sold her baby for R5 000 on Gumtree will likely plead guilty on charges of human trafficking.

The 20-year old mother who allegedly sold her baby for R5 000 on Gumtree has been denied bail, according to reports.

The Pietermaritzburg-based woman appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday and cannot be identified to protect the identity of her 19-month-old infant.

Further reports suggest she is most likely to plead guilty to charges of human trafficking when she returns to court next Thursday.

“Her legal attorney told Magistrate M Boikhutso she had decided to abandon her bid for bail and was instead considering a possible guilty plea,” one report read.

On Wednesday 7 October, the woman allegedly put up an advert on Gumtree saying she was selling her 19-month-old son.

Days later (Sunday 11 October) the Hawks launched a sting operation where one of the detectives posed as a buyer.

The detective gave the woman an amount of R5 000 and she handed over the baby.

She was immediately arrested.

Rekord’s attempts to reach both the National Prosecuting Authority and the Hawks for comment were unsuccessful.
