Dog poisoning grips Valhalla

Nine dogs poisoned in two months in Valhalla.

Valhalla in Centurion is in the midst of a dog poisoning epidemic.

An estimated nine dogs have been poisoned in the last two months in Aero, Vinstra, Angvick, Oscar Hugo, Baldur and Alaric roads.

“This is definitely a grave concern for us,” said CPF head Braam Rossouw.

“There is a direct correlation between when a dog is poisoned and when a home is robbed. A home is usually robbed within one week of the dog being poisoned.”

Rossouw said the CPF along with police and security agencies conducted a mass patrol on Friday evening to root out criminal elements and those responsible for the dog poisonings.

“To keep the dogs safe, we urge everyone to either keep their dogs inside or at the back of their property.”

Tshwane SPCA official, Korky Levanon says the most common poison used is Aldicarb, which has been dubbed Two-Step. It is sold as Temik.

“Temik is not available for the public to buy. Only registered farmers can purchase it. The problem is the poison gets stolen from farmers, and used to poison dogs. The poison is easily purchased at any taxi rank.”

“If anyone sees anything suspicious they should immediately phone the CPF on 082-884-9143,” said Rossouw.
