Homeless man beaten to death with rock

Two men arrested after homeless man found murdered.

Two men have been arrested for allegedly beating an elderly homeless man to death in Mountain View in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The men, aged 24 and 31, were first noticed by CPF members after they were involved in a scuffle with an elderly man just after 02:00 between Charl Cillers Street and Sarel Avenue in Mountain View.

According to CPF members the young men apparently said the elderly man was trying to damage their car. The elderly man had a bruised lip and paramedics were called in to assist.

“The men did not, however, have a vehicle with them and we told the man that he can open a case of assault with the police. We left shortly after treating him. Withing a few minutes we were called back to the scene,” said Basic Ambulance Assistance spokesperson Albert Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen.

“When we arrived back on scene the two men were still there but the elderly man was dead. He had been hit in the face with what appeared to be a large rock. We declared him dead when we arrived.”

Hercules police were immediately called in and arrested the two men.

Police could not yet comment.
