Stone Cradle burns to the ground

Popular restaurant goes up in smoke.

The ever popular Stone Cradle restaurant and function venue went up in flames on Sunday morning.

Johan Pieterse of Tshwane emergency services said the cause of the massive blaze is not known.

“The large thatched roof of the restaurant caught fire. The high temperatures and strong winds only exacerbated the fire,” said Pieterse.

“Five fire trucks were deployed to put the fire out, but the fire spread too quickly. The roof collapsed and the building has been destroyed by the fire.”

He said no one was injured in the blaze.

Workers from Stone Cradle said they evacuated the building when they saw the fire on the roof. They have all since been sent home as firefighters put out the last remnants of the fire.

Pieterse said an extensive investigation into the cause of the fire will be undertaken.
