Cause of Stone Cradle fire unknown

It is still unknown what caused the fire that burnt down the popular restaurant near Rietvlei dam on Sunday.

The cause of a massive fire that razed the Stone Cradle restaurant complex near Rietvlei dam is being investigated.

“We have no idea what could have caused this,” said owner Katrien Coetzee.

The runaway fire completely destroyed Stone Cradle, leaving behind only charred rubble of one of Centurion’s favourite scenic spots.

No one died in the fire, but four people were treated for smoke inhalation.

“We thank everyone involved during this time, especially those who helped put out the fire,” said Coetzee.

“At the moment we cannot say much, but people can keep an eye on our Facebook page for more updates.”

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Johan Pieterse confirmed an investigation into the cause of the fire would be conducted.

He said fire fighters mustered all their resources to battle the blaze.

“The Centurion station has one rescue pumper (fire truck) and one Land Cruiser bakkie used to combat veld fires. Both of these, along with four other fire trucks from other Pretoria stations, were called in to assist with the Stone Cradle fire.”

He said broken down fire trucks currently standing at the Centurion fire station had been decommissioned.
