Alleged car thief arrested after high speed chase

A 30-year-old was arrested on Monday when he crashed into the rocks during a police chase.

An alleged car thief was arrested on Monday following a high speed chase with the police in Pretoria CBD where he was driving a stolen vehicle.

Spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said they are investigating a case of theft of a motor vehicle after a man was found driving a white Toyota Hilux single cab reported stolen in the Pretoria CBD.

“A 30-year-old man was spotted by members of the Pretoria Flying Squad while driving on Maunde Street. As they were following up on information, a similar vehicle which was reported stolen from the Tshwane District hospital on Monday at 13:30 appeared,” he said.

Moloto said police signaled the driver to stop but he failed to adhere to the instruction of the police officers and a high speed chase ensued thereafter.

“The suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into rocks on the roadside at the corner of Maunde and Vergenoeg streets. He was subsequently arrested and detained at Atteridgeville police station.”

Moloto said a case of theft of a motor vehicle has been opened for further police investigation and the suspect will appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court soon.
