Domestic worker out on bail
A domestic worker, who planned the murder and robbery of a well-known DA-councillor from the north of Pretoria, has been released on bail.
A domestic worker who planned the murder and robbery of a well-known DA councillor from the north of Pretoria, has been released on bail.
“I am very disappointed with the judicial system,” said the councillor who wants to remain anonymous, as she fears for her life.
The domestic worker, only known as Mariam, spent a month in custody and was released on R1 000 bail by the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
She was the sole provider for her family, the magistrate argued and she was not a high flight-risk.
Furthermore, he argued she was not a danger to anyone.
But the councillor did not agree: “She planned to shoot me and I fear for my life.”
The councillor said her family employed the domestic worker three years ago. “I treated her like family. I trusted her with my life,” she said.
The councillor realised that her domestic worker was up to no good when a man had called her saying the domestic worker had offered to sell him a laptop that apparently belonged to the councillor’s life partner. But the man was still waiting for the domestic worker to bring the charger.
“He wanted a reward for giving me the information so I asked him to tell me everything,” said the councillor.
Then the story of how the domestic worker planned to rob and kill her unfolded. From then, the councillor involved the police.
About a month ago, she, accompanied by two police officers from the Wonderboompoort police station, went to the domestic worker’s house in KwaMhlanga, in Mpumalanga where they found fake identity documents, counterfeit money worth thousands of rand, bank statements and the councillor’s salary slips.
The domestic worker was arrested for identity theft.
She is due in court on 11 November.
