UPDATE: Police still searching for jewellery store robbers

Police are still searching for the other robbers involved in the robbery of a jewellery store at Mall@Reds.

Police have launched a manhunt for the other suspects involved with the jewellery store robbery at Mall@Reds on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said police were investigating a case of business robbery.

“According to our information, three suspects entered the jewellery store, held the workers up at gunpoint and robbed them,” said Moloto. However, Orange Fox Security reported five suspects entering the store. Moloto said police were still trying to determine exactly how many people were involved in the robbery and were investigating the matter further.

He said the men then fled the scene in a white VW Caddy, but abandoned their vehicle inside the mall when police and security gave chase.

“The suspects got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. One of the suspects was caught and arrested after he shot an ADT officer. One unlicensed firearm with an erased serial number was recovered on the suspect,” he said.

Vanessa Jacobs from Orange Fox Security told Rekord on Saturday that a woman and man walked into the store, scouted what was happening and walked out just before the five robbers walked into the jewellery store.

“The five robbers walked in and asked for jewellery and money. They took cellphones as well. One of the workers at the jewellery store walked in and started screaming,” Jacobs said.

“The robbers then pointed a gun at her and took everything, before walking out of the store.”

Jacobs said one of the women working at the store walked out of the store to shout for help, which is when the robbers’ vehicle was prevented from leaving the premises by the mall’s gate.

“Orange Fox closed the gates to the mall. The robbers got out of their vehicle and fled the scene on foot. One was apprehended, but the others got away,” explained Jacobs.

She said that Copwatch and ADT gave chase to one of the suspects. There was a shootout, and an ADT officer was shot in the arm by the suspect.

Jacobs said the robbers had 9mm pistols on them. Everything that was taken during the robbery was recovered.
