Video shows robbery at Orchards petrol station
Armed robbers were caught on video at a petrol station in Orchards.
Armed criminals were caught on camera when they robbed the Engen petrol station on the corner of Doreen and Hulton streets in Orchards this week. The robbery took place around 21:30 on Wednesday evening.
Erich Landsberg, operations manager for the Amandasig Action group in Akasia, the Sector 2 CPF, said one of the workers managed to call the owner of the garage, who belongs to the Pretoria North Sector CPF and he called it in on his radio.
“Ingride Schuster heard the call and phoned me. We had guys at the garage within two minutes, watching the vehicle from a safe distance,” Landsberg said.
“The robbers had already bombed the drop safe and ATM by that time. Four males, at least two of them armed with either AK47 or R5 firearms, robbed the garage. They left the petrol station in a Golf 6 GTI.
Landsberg said the Amandasig Action Group pursued the vehicle, losing it a couple of times as the suspects raced through the streets of the Orchards and Chantelle residential areas.
“But every time we managed to track them again, as we were covering all choke points leaving the area. We engaged in a high-speed chase from Malan en Seuns in Brits Road in a westerly direction,” he said.
They tried to get in contact with the SAP flying squad to assist them in the chase. However, the flying squad arrived to assist in the chase.
At the old Brits road, they turned left again in a westerly direction towards Brits.
“Roughly 10km to 15km before Brits, we lost them. We believe they turned into Ga-Rankuwa.”
Landsberg said the chase then became dangerous, as the robbers were driving recklessly and took chances on the road to overtake other vehicles.
“The way things were going, it seemed there was a possibility the robbers were going to shoot at us. The SAPS caught up with us, but by this time we had unfortunately already lost the robbers,” explained Landsberg.
Police spokesperson Constable Reneilwe Makwalo confirmed the robbery to Rekord, saying the men fled in an unknown vehicle with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police could not be reached for further comment.
