Community helps arrest alleged car thief

Community helps police recover a stolen vehicle.

When residents and the police work together, crime fighting becomes successful.

This comes after residents notified the police of a suspicious vehicle parked in their area, which was later discovered to have been stolen.

Police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said the stolen vehicle was recovered on the morning of 7 November.

“Residents saw the vehicle on the corner of Wilhelm and Attie streets in Booysens. They called the police who on arrival inspected the car and it was reported stolen in the Hercules area on 29 August from inside a yard,” he said.

A 39-year-old man was found inside the Toyota Corolla sedan. Msimango said the man told police the owner went to buy petrol and has not returned.

“We arrested the man and charged him for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He is yet to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court,” said Msimango.

He said this kind of arrest showed that when police and the community work together, crime can be fought effectively.

“The police urges people to condemn any acts of criminality and to continue to report crime to the police.

“It is only when we work together as a collective that our crime-fighting efforts will receive a significant boost,” concluded Msimango.
