A police officer was shot and wounded in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Monday afternoon.

Police said the officer was airlifted to Milpark hospital, where she was being treated for several upper body wounds. Her condition was described as severe.

The victim and a colleague were seeking to pull over a car on the highway when the occupants opened fire. The second officer was not wounded.

The shooters fled in a white BMW X-series with tinted windows.

This follows a string of police killings that saw more than 60 police officers being murdered this year alone.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko told Parliament in September that more than two thirds of the killings (71%) happened when police were responding to the needs of the public.

He said at the time steps would be taken to ensure officers had the proper safety gear and were briefed on risks when off duty.

“The 60 policemen killed so far this year would have been responsible for the safety of approximately 21,480 people,” said Nhleko.

He said statistics showed that 45.7% of victims were killed during complaints like robbery, 11.4% while carrying out arrests, 5.7% during searches of persons or vehicles and 14% to what police called “random killings”.
