19 die in truck and taxi crash

An accident scene was described as chaos after 19 people died when a truck and taxi collided on Sunday.

Nineteen people died and four were critically injured when a truck and taxi collided on the R28 towards Vereeniging on Sunday.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said paramedics and other emergency services arrived on the scene and described it as chaotic.

“Injured people were strewn across the scene. It is understood the taxi lost control and collided with the truck,” she said.

Some passengers suffered multiple injuries, including burn wounds. Three people, including a young child, were airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

“One critically injured was transported by ambulance and the truck driver who sustained minor injuries was also taken to hospital,” Bodasing said

The cause of the incident was unknown and under police investigation.
