31 injured after jumping off moving train

31 people were injured in Irene after they jumped off a moving train on Tuesday.

Thirty-one people were injured when they jumped off a moving Metrorail train on Tuesday morning in Irene, Centurion.

This after the train drove over an electric cable, causing a bang and smoke.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said this happened about 3km from the Irene train station towards Midrand.

“The passengers heard a bang and saw smoke and they all panicked. They jumped out of the moving train,” he told Rekord.

He said 25 people had minor injuries. A further six were seriously injured.

“The injuries were from the jump and they were treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.”

He said the train continued on it’s way as the train driver was not aware of the electrical bang.

No one was treated for smoke inhalation, Botha said.
