Scores arrested

Police have arrested 116 people in Sunnyside and Pretoria Central over the weekend.

The Sunnyside police arrested 116 people for a range of crimes at the weekend, in Sunnyside and central Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Captain Koba Brits said the operation was a success and people were detained for crimes ranging from assault to housebreaking.

“The crimes they committed include armed robbery, common robbery, shoplifting, drunkenness, illegal immigrants, possession of drugs, possession of housebreaking equipment, attempted theft and others,” she said.

“Some of the crimes that need to be addressed in the areas are theft of motor vehicle, theft out of motor vehicle, housebreaking and armed robberies.”

Brits urged the public to assist the police by reporting crime in their area.

Brits gave motorists the following tips:

– Ensure that your vehicle is always in good condition

– Make sure the vehicle has enough fuel and that your cellphone is charged.

– Do not leave valuables such as packages, cellphones, handbags and laptops in the car where they are visible to passersby. Lock them in the boot.

– Keep all doors locked and windows closed

– Always park in a well-lit, safe place

– Avoid driving in the dark as much as possible between 18:00 and 22:00

– Do not pick up hitch-hikers

– If you are followed, drive to the nearest police station

– Be careful if someone approaches your vehicle and do not open your window

– Keep a list of emergency numbers in your vehicle

– If you need to stop, be alert at all times.
