A video surfaced on social media at the weekend, showing three criminals gaining entry into a residence after disconnecting an electric gate motor in an attempted robbery.

In the footage uploaded by Copwatch security to Facebook on Sunday, a white Suzuki vehicle can be seen on CCTV surveillance passing only to make a u-turn and park in front of the residence.

Two men climb out of the vehicle and tamper with the electric gate motor.

Within seconds the two deactivate the motor and derail the gate to gain access onto the property.

A third man follows them as they run toward the house and seem to have taken something from the house as they all hastily make their way back to the car which, by now, has reversed into the driveway inside the gate.

The three get into the car and drive off, leaving the gate open.

This comes after the Wierdabrug police last week, warned residents of an increased electric gate motor tampering and theft.

Electric gate motor theft was on the increase in Centurion, Wierdabrug police warned last week.

Spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said several such crimes were reported in the past few days.

Police appealed to homeowners to secure their gate motors with hardened steel reinforcements to ensure they could not be removed or tampered with.

Huma said in the last reported theft, residents woke up to a stolen gate motor.

“Most of the residents only realise the motor is stolen in the morning,” said Huma.

She said it was advisable to take every precaution to ensure the safety of the motor instead of having to replace it after it had been stolen.

Gate motor thefts had been on the rise in and around Pretoria since earlier this year.

In September, Eersterust police spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo said residents needed to take precaution against the rising theft of gate motors.

Shibambo advised residents to make a metal enclosure for the motor with thick bars to enhance security, or to mount the gate motor on a firm concrete slab and to weld it.

Police asked anyone with information about stolen gate motors to call Wierdabrug police station on 012-685-0015.
