Four armed men were arrested for attempted bank robbery in Soshanguve on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson, Constable Petunia Chabangu said police were tipped-off about a plan to rob a bank at the Soshanguve shopping centre on Tuesday afternoon and acted quickly.
“According to our informant, the gang of ten men planned to rob an Absa at the Soshanguve Plaza shopping centre,” she said.
Chabangu told Rekord the police were able to nab four of the men, while others managed to flee in two cars.
“Police scouted the area where the robbery was going to take place, and saw the vehicles they had been tipped-off about.
They called for backup and managed to corner one of the vehicles,” she said.
The gang was travelling in four different cars – an Audi, Golf GTI, VW Polo and a BMW.
The three men travelling in the black GTI were cornered at a Pick n Pay complex next to the shopping centre. They are aged 27, 34 and 35.
“A [cellphone] jamming device and reflector jackets were found inside the car,” said Chabangu.
Police recovered a pistol hidden under the passenger seat. There were also 15 rounds of ammunition, as well as one magazine.
The four men would be charged with attempted bank robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and the unlawful possession of an electronic jamming device.
They would appear in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court soon, Chabangu said.
