Two detained for forklift theft, fraud

Three men were arrested after they defrauded a forklift company near Silverton.

Three men were arrested for possession of stolen property and fraud near Silverton after they defrauded a forklift hiring company.

Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the men had ordered the forklifts from a company in Kempton Park, and requested delivery be made to Pretoria.

“They ordered the forklifts last Monday, and when the driver delivered to the given address, he found nothing but open space,” Sepato said.

After phoning the men for the correct address, the driver was told to deliver the forklift at another address on Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

“The driver arrived and found a man who signed for [receipt of] the forklift,” he said.

He said on Tuesday, a second delivery of another forklift was made to the said address. The third forklift was delivered the following day, Sepato said.

“The delivery man got suspicious when he was asked to deliver a fourth forklift this week.

He contacted the company the men claimed to be from, but the company had no idea of any forklift delivery. That is when the delivery man contacted Silverton police and we strategically placed ourselves near the delivery address.”

Upon delivering the fourth forklift on Monday, police arrested three men, aged 27, 36 and 44, for possession of suspected stolen vehicle.

The three forklifts were however not recovered, Sepato said.

“Anyone with information on the three stolen forklifts should please contact the detective branch on 012-845-4011.”

He said the men were also charged with fraud by the Kempton Park police.
