Young and old enjoy a game of cricket in Eersterust
Young people from Eersterust were given a chance to play a game with former Proteas player Alviro Petersen at the Eersterust Cricket Club.
Eersterust cricket club hosted a successful Select XI cricket side of the Alviro Petersen Foundation as part of the T20 tournament on Saturday.
Former Proteas cricket player Alviro Petersen formed his organisation that supports aspiring young cricket players from disadvantaged communities.
Petersen also played one of the games as he returned to his roots having played for the club early in his career.
Eersterust cricket club chairman, Lucien Jordaan, said he was proud that the Alviro Petersen Foundation could assist young players in Eersterust, which is an area battling with drugs and crime.
“This is the first of its kind in Eersterust. We are pleased the Alviro Petersen Foundation could support us today,” Jordaan said.
He said through the Alviro Petersen Foundation’s initiative, more young children interested in cricket would be given an opportunity to grow in the sport.
“The support of the Alviro Petersen Foundation has enabled the club management to ensure that the club provides an environment for the junior cricketers to have a safe place to engage in constructive activities and contribute to the upliftment of the community,” Jordaan said.
The Eersterust cricket club is composed of three senior teams and five junior teams. The tournament would end with the final game on Sunday 6 December.
