Rietgat police have expressed concern about the alarming rate of car hijackings around Soshanguve and further warned motorists to be vigilant.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena has warned drivers to be vigilant following a spate of hijackings in Soshanguve over the past two weeks.
Over fifteen cars have been hijacked in recent days.
Police have not found a link between the attacks and were investigating if the spike was the result of copycats.
Recently, a female driver was ordered out of her car by a man after she had parked in front of her friend’s gate in an attempted hijack in Block KK l.
“The man knocked on her window with a gun. She started the car and hurriedly drove off. The gunmen fired a shot at the window but luckily she was unhurt,” he said.
Mangena said that someone might be killed if the spate of car hijackings continued.
“Somebody could be hit by one of these stolen cars or the hijackers themselves may be killed if they lose control of the car,” he said.
He appealed to the police to deal with the crime and reassure the public.
He urged drivers to keep doors locked while driving and to keep valuables out of sight.
Drivers have also been warned to beware of anyone who approaches their car.
