Twelve people were arrested for looting and damaging shops in Atteridgeville on Monday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Bonginkosi Msimango said the evicted people started looting shops in Atteridgeville.

“On Monday morning, there was an eviction of illegal occupants at the new housing development around Saulsville. During the evictions, people turned to foreign shops and started looting,” he said.

Msimango said the looters took everything from cigarettes to cold drinks.

“Police were called to the scene in the afternoon and managed to calm down the situation. Several people carrying stolen goods were arrested on the scene and taken to the Atteridgeville police station.”

Msimango said no one was reported injured during the looting and nothing was burned down.

“The situation is now under control. We have not yet established how many spaza shops were attacked,” he said.

Msimango said the arrested people were expected to appear in court soon.
