A community patroller was shot and wounded in Silverton when he confronted three hijackers on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the three men apparently hijacked a British American Tobacco vehicle in Garsfontein.
The driver ran away.
The trio unloaded the cargo and took the cigarettes to Silverton.
“As the patroller was passing through Suikerbos Avenue, he noticed people offloading cigarettes from three cars,” Sepato said.
“The patroller moved closer to confront them and as he got there, a scuffle ensued. A few seconds later, a shot went off and the patroller was hit in the upper thigh.”
Sepato said the three fled the scene in three cars — a Hyundai, Mazda and a BMW.
“The 38-year-old patroller is currently recovering in hospital while the suspects are still on the run. The BAT vehicle was recovered on Thursday,” he said.
