One killed in shootout during car chase

A police chase from Johannesburg left one dead during a shootout in Centurion.

One person was shot dead while another was arrested after a police chase and a shootout on the Old Johannesburg Road in Centurion on Thursday afternoon.

Orange Fox Security spokesperson Vanessa Jacobs said two men in a Chevrolet Lumina were chased by the Johannesburg metro police (JMPD) after they allegedly committed a crime in Johannesburg.

“During the chase, a shootout ensued between the JMPD and the suspects. The Lumina was apparently stolen in Johannesburg in the morning,” she said.

She said the men lost control of their car and collided with another car on Old Johannesburg Road and Brakfontein Road, slightly injuring the female driver.

The man driving the Lumina was fatally shot and his accomplice was arrested, Jacobs said.

“We arrived at the scene and closed off the road. We also had to disperse the crowd from the scene of the accident.”

Electronics and house breaking tools were found in the Lumina, Jacobs said.

Police were not available for comment at the time of publishing.
