A man set his girlfriend alight in Soshanguve on Wednesday after he accused her of cheating.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said on Thursday the 32-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when her boyfriend set her on fire in their home in Block P.

“The victim said she received a call from her driver just after she arrived home. Her boyfriend was home at the time and heard a voice of a man over the phone. He immediately lost it and accused the victim of cheating.”

Mangena said the boyfriend slapped the victim a number of times before he decided to leave the house.

“The boyfriend came back a few minutes later carrying a cold drink bottle. He opened the bottle and started pouring paraffin on the victim before setting her on fire.”

“While she was on fire, she managed to run for help. She screamed in agony as she broke through the windows in an attempt to get help,” he said,

Mangena said the neighbours managed to put out the fire and took her to the nearest clinic.

“The boyfriend is still on the run. A case of attempted murder was opened,” he said.
