Police conduct door-to-door campaign in Mabopane

Police conducted a door-to-door campaign in Mabopane on Thursday, aimed at raising crime awareness in the community.

Dube police, reservists and members of the community safety, patrollers, community policing forum (CPF) held a door-to-door campaign aimed at raising crime awareness ahead of the festive season.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tembi Nowathe said: “We distributed over 1 000 pamphlets with crime prevention hints on crime and safety tips. We are concerned about crime in the community, especially crimes against women and children such as rape and assault. The aim of the outreach campaign was to empower women and children in the fight against crime as we approach the festive season. There was a sense of appreciation from the community during the campaign. We definitely focus on sustainable interaction with the diverse community,” said Nowathe.

She said the campaign was ongoing and that the awareness followed crime analysis showing that crime was escalating around the Dube policing area.

Among other things which were addressed during the campaign were murder, business robbery, house robbery, sexual assault, mob justice and other recurring cases around the area.

“As part of the campaign, we educated community members, and also distributed pamphlets on domestic violence and sexual assault to equip them with what domestic violence is and [how] to report such cases to the police,” she said.

The police were also doing a survey on their reaction time whenever they are attending complaints. It was found that the response is positive but in other instances the issue of streets not having names hinders the response time.
