ATM robbed in Erasmusrand

An ATM bombing on Tuesday night in Erasmusrand was heard as far as the west of Pretoria.

Armed men made off with an undisclosed amount of money on Tuesday night in Erasmusrand after bombing an ATM.

Hi-Risk Unit operations manager Arthur Crewe said the blast at the Engen garage in Rigel Avenue was heard around 23:20.

“A police officer going somewhere was ambushed by the robbers and they opened fire when they saw him,” Crewe said.

He said the officer called for backup. Crewe and other members from Hi-Risk rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the explosion.

The men fled the scene a few minutes earlier. Hi-Risk and the police gave chase.

“Customers and workers at the fuel station were held hostage by the men before they fled with the money from the ATM,” said Crewe.

No one was injured.

Crewe advised people to be vigilant at fuel stations and to report strange activities.

Police could not give comment at the time of publication.
