No arrest after young man’s shooting
Police have not made an arrest in the shooting on a young man in Irene recently.
A police search for the killer of a 21-year-old man from Irene is continuing.
Spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said police had by Thursday not arrested anyone after Calden Cunha was shot dead last week while trying to protect friends.
Cunha, a Val De Grace resident, was shot in the chest while confronting two would-be robbers who had surprised his friends.
Cunha will be buried sometime this week.
His mother, Vennaleen Cunha said her son was outside Railways Café in the parking lot on the other side of the shopping centre with two female friends.
As he walked back into the restaurant, leaving his friends behind, he heard screaming from behind.
“Two men had come out of the dark and shot into the ground to scare the two girls. It seems they wanted to steal my son’s car. My son ran back,” she told Rekord.
She said her son fought off one of the men but the other turned to him and shot him in the chest.
“It was a fatal shot. He dropped there and then and died a few seconds later. The two men ran away without taking anything,” she said.
Railway Café’s TJ Bryant said he became aware of the shooting when a woman came into the restaurant to ask for help.
“A lady came running to our shop asking for help and we tried to help.”
Cunha said her son was a happy individual.
“He lit up everyone’s life. This is so devastating. It is the worst thing to lose your child in such a senseless killing. They could have taken anything. They did not have to kill him.”
