NEWSFLASH: Pretoria girl killed while on holiday
A Hoërskool Eldoraigne pupil has been killed in Trafalga, KwaZulu- Natal while on holiday.
A Centurion teenager was killed for her cellphone in Trafalgar in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.
Shayleen van Zanten (15), a pupil of Hoërskool Eldoraigne, was on holiday with her father and friends when this happened.
The girl and her friends were going for a walk when they noticed a man walking towards them, KZN provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.
He said police are investigating a case of murder and no arrests have been made thus far.
“At about 19:30 on Wednesday a girl was stabbed by an unknown man who allegedly demanded her cellphone while they were taking a walk in Falke Land Road, Trafalgar,” Zwane said.
Apparently when the girls saw the unknown man they decided to turn back to the beach house, but the man blocked Van Zanten at the entrance gate.
The man apparently asked for her cellphone and when she refused, he stabbed her in the chest, groin and arm.
She was taken to the hospital where she died.
Hoërskool Eldoraigne posted the news of her death on its Facebook page and conveyed condolences to her family.
“It is with heartbreak that we were notified of the tragic incident where a grade 9 girl from our school die. Our deepest sympathy goes out to her parents, family and friends,” the school said.
The school described Van Zanten as a beautiful young lady, who performed well academically and in a quiet way always made a positive contribution in any situation.
Van Zanten was a member of the Forest Knights Ice Hockey Club and one of her team mates posted a photo of her, saying how she would be missed.
Messages of condolences have poured in for the young girl’s family and friends.
