UPDATE: Two arrested after a courier killed by stray bullet
Two people were arrested after a high speed chase and shootout between alleged hijackers and police that left a man dead.
Two men were arrested in Centurion on Friday after a high-speed chase and shootout that saw a stray bullet killing a courier.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the drama began in Moreleta Park around 11:00.
“The suspects hijacked a cigarette van and loaded the cigarettes in their Huyndai H1. They were spotted by police while fleeing the scene,” Gumbu said.
The police chased them along Solomon Mahlangu Drive. The fugitives skipped red traffic lights, but crashed into a wall on the corner of Cradock and Trichardt streets in Centurion, Gumbu said.
“Two of the suspects were arrested. The hijackers were also using two other cars, a BMW and Audi. During the shootout, a member of the public was struck by a stray bullet and died.”
The man killed was Willy Mosenye (32), a courier for De Beer De Jager Radiologist.
The HR manager of the company, Florance Skinner, told Rekord Mosenye was on his way on a motorcycle from another office across town to the next.
“Willy was such a friendly person who was always smiling and never frowned. He was always laughing,” she said.
Gumbu said 26 cigarette boxes were found in the Huyndai.
Police knew of a third man who escaped but believed more people were involved in the hijacking.
Gumbu urged anyone with information on the matter to come forward.
