Hartbeespoort cable car bar burns

Bar at popular cableway burns down as storms rip area apart.

The lookout bar at the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway burned down last night as lighting, severe winds and massive hail ripped through the area.

The cableway’s general manager, Iain Gunn, said lighting struck the deck of the lookout bar around 21:00 last night, before quickly turning into a large fire.

“The fire quickly spread. We immediately called in the fire brigade who assisted in fighting it,” said Gunn.

“Fortunately for us the wind was blowing west, and away from the cableway. The fire only damaged the bar. Unfortunately we had to cut away a large piece of the deck to prevent the fire from spreading.”

The fire was eventually put out at 23:00.

Gunn said normal operations at the cableway will resume around 10:00 on Sunday morning.

“Everything else is still open. We have cordoned off the damaged area.”

Severe storms ripped through Gauteng last night, causing massive damage in Krugersdorp, Roodepoort and Hartbeespoort.
