Raslouw residents were left shocked and disgusted as a full grown pig was inhumanely slaughtered in a back garden on Monday afternoon.
SPCA inspector Job Masombuka responded to the calls of distressed residents.
One resident described the scene as horrifying, as the frightened pig ran for its life while three workers on the plot chased it with pick axes.
When Masombuka arrived, reaction officers from both Monitor Net and Copwatch were on scene, along with curious residents.
The three workers admitted to Masombuka that they had killed the pig, but could not give him access to the property as they did not have any key to the gates.
When the home owners arrived, they were shocked to hear that the pig had been killed on their property.
The couple, who wanted to stay anonymous, said they had received the pig as a gift from a friend, who sold packaged pork.
“We received the pig three months ago and have been trying to find a home for it ever since. We even put an advertisement on the online site OLX, asking someone to come and fetch it,” they said.
“We eventually told our workers to take the pig home with them and slaughter it there. We never expected that they would do it at our home or so cruelly. We never wanted this.”
When Rekord visited the property with Masombuka, the pig was lying decapitated in a wheelbarrow next to a fire at the back of the property. The knife used to cut its head off was still sticking out of its neck.
Masombuka urged people to educate themselves on the proper way to care for animals, and to learn what the proper procedures were when slaughtering an animal.
“It is not illegal to slaughter an animal meant for human consumption within a residential area,” said Masombuka.
“However, when an animal is slaughtered, proper guidelines need to be followed.”
He said people needed to inform the city’s department of health as well as the SPCA of their intention to slaughter an animal, like a cow, sheep, or pig. The killing needed to then be conducted safely, correctly, and in such a way that the animal did not suffer.
“If people want to slaughter an animal but do not know how, the SPCA will come and assist. We cannot stop the animal from being killed, as it is not illegal, but we can insure that the animal does not suffer.”
The cruel slaughter of the pig is being investigated by the SPCA.
