A busy sporting weekend awaits sport fans. The long wait is over and hopeful Bulls fans can see their new, young team in action for the first time this weekend when the SupeRugby tournament will begin in all severity for 2016.
Rugby
The long wait since last year’s World Cup is over for rugby followers who can see top players in action again this weekend.
In 2016. the evolution of SupeRugby continues with three new sides introduced to an expanded four-conference, two-group model. The Kings from South Africa return to the fray, along with the Jaguares from Argentina and the Sunwolves from Japan, taking SupeRugby to new places, new markets and new crowds.
For the Bulls supporters of Pretoria, all that really matters is that their team starts the 2016 SupeRugby campaign with a game in Cape Town against arch rivals, the Stormers. This game starts at 17:15 on Saturday.
On Monday 29 February the beleaguered team from the University of Pretoria will march to Cape Town for their Varsity Cup match at UCT. This game will start at 16:45.
Athletics
Sunday, 28 February will once again see the streets of Pretoria painted in blue and green as thousands of runners set off to participate in the annual Deloitte Pretoria marathon. The race will start and end at the Pretoria High School Old Boys Club, c/o Kings Highway and Queens Crescent. The event consists of a 42,2km standard marathon, a 21,1km half marathon and a 10km road race. The marathon and half marathon starts at 06:00 and the 10km run/walk starts at 06:20.
Cricket
The South African national women’s cricket team are winning the hearts of many fans now that they also get TV exposure.
After their tough series against England, Mignon du Preez and her team are already busy with their next series. This time they play against the West Indies women’s team. Their first game was on Wednesday and their next game will take place on Saturday in East London.
Meanwhile the final of the Momentum One Day Cup will take place on Sunday when the Cape Cobras will await the winner of the semi-final at Newlands in Cape Town. The semi-final was played on Wednesday between the Highveld Lions and the Warriors in Johannesburg.
Soccer
The Premier League football series will continue this weekend and all three local teams will be in action.
Mamelodi Sundowns already faced a tough challenge from Black Aces at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. This game was played on Wednesday but the outcome was not known at the time when this preview was written.
The University of Pretoria (AmaTuks) are still staring relegation in the face with their second last place in the standings. Victory against Chippa United on Saturday will bring welcome relief to them. This game will be played on the Tuks stadium and starts at 15:30.
The last game in which a local team will be in action, is the fixture between Jomo Cosmos and SuperSport United. It will take place at 15:30 on Saturday at Olien Park in Potchefstroom.
