TUT condemns violent protest

TUT speaks out against a violent protest on Tuesday morning, which led to seven people ending up in hospital.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) strongly condemned a violent scuffle that erupted on Tuesday morning during a protest by a group of labourers involved with the #OutsourcingMustFall campaign.

The protest took place outside the main gate of the Pretoria West TUT campus.

Seven people were injured and taken to hospital.

“The SAPS and TUT campus protection services contained the situation. Activities at the Pretoria West campus are continuing as normal,” a statement from TUT read.

Activities at TUT’s Soshanguve campuses will remain suspended on Wednesday, 2 March, following student protest action that started on Monday.

“The safety of the TUT community on these campuses and public property need to be considered at all times. The situation will be monitored continuously and an announcement on the resumption of activities is expected tomorrow,” read the statement.

“The resumption of activities at these campuses is a matter of urgency for the university and the issues are receiving serious attention.”
