Green thinking stops illegal truck stop

Municipality uses trees to stops truckers.

Some green thinking by the Tshwane metro has seen an illegal truck stop in Lyttelton, come to an end.

Instead of using expensive bollards or ugly barricades, authorities instead decided to plants rows of trees to keep the troublesome truckers out.

The once drab field that runs along Amkor Road between Botha and Topaz avenues will now grow into a field of green, indigenous trees.

Ward councillor Clive Napier said residents continually complained that large trucks would park overnight in the field.

As there were no ablution facilities, the truckers would use the field as a toilet, to the chagrin of residents.

“I reported the issue to the metro several times. Bollards and barricades are too expensive, so the decision was made to rather plant trees,” said Napier.

“Now the dreary field will have some beautiful trees. This is a real good news story.”
