Electricity workers back on duty

Tshwane electricity technicians in Centurion back on duty after downing tools.

Tshwane electricity workers in Region 4 in Centurion are back at work after downing tools at the weekend.

“The metro had not paid for overtime they had worked above the 60 hour cap imposed by the metro’s pay systems,” said DA Tshwane spokesperson on electricity Ina Strijdom.

“…the metro has failed to pay the technicians of region 4 in Centurion their overtime since November last year. It is unacceptable that the Tshwane metro cannot pay its technicians overtime, but instead spends money on outsourcing contracts when their technicians near their cap.”

An agreement was however quickly reached between the metro and the technicians, and all were back at work on Monday.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said workers would soon be paid for the overtime they worked.

“As far as we are aware the unpaid money is only for January and February, not for four months. This unpaid money will soon be paid,” said Mashigo.

“The external contractors are also only brought in as backup for the workers nearing the 60 hour cap so that the backlog could be addressed. They did not replace the Tshwane workers.”

Strijdom suggested that the Tshwane metro urgently lifted the 60 hour cap. “…in an effort to ensure that metro technicians are being paid when they pass 60 hours work time.”
