New farmers’ market has something for everyone

Farmers' market aims to make a positive contribution.

More than 30 vendors recently came out to display their wares at the newly launched Forest Hill City farmers’ market.

The market, which will be held once a month, provides a platform for budding entrepreneurs.

The first market featured a fantastic collection of stalls offering fresh produce and mouth-watering artisanal food, craft beer and other proudly South African products.

The centre’s marketing manager Annah Moremela said the market aims to uplift local entrepreneurs.

25% of the proceeds from vendor bookings from the first market went to Wierda Park primary school, and those from the next market will go to another school or local NGO.

Moremela sees the new market as a community hub, a place to meet up with friends and for parents to bring their children and spend quality time together.

“Large agribusiness dominates food production in this country, making it hard for small family farms to compete in the food marketplace. Buying directly from farmers gives them a fighting chance,” she said.
