Nurse assaulted after patient’s death

The man is said to have held the nurse by her throat and squeezed.

Police have arrested a man for assaulting a nurse at Odi Hospital after his relative died at the weekend.

Gauteng health spokesperson Steve Mabona said the man was not happy with a drip while visiting a patient.

“The nurse immediately attended the call to rectify matters. However, while busy with the procedure of inserting the drip, the patient stopped breathing.”

After the sudden death of the patient, the man assaulted the nurse, punching her and shouting obscenities.

According to reports, the man held the nurse by her throat and squeezed.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said the man was arrested.

“He is facing charges of common assault and will appear at the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court soon,” he said on Wednesday.

Mabona said the man and his family apologised to the nurse for the assault.

“The man was remorseful and the family apologised. As the department we are condemning the action irrespective of what transpired,” he said.

“We cannot condone the assault of our health professionals by members of the community.”

The nurse was on sick leave and psychological support would be given to her and hospital employees, said Mabona.
