Residents roll up sleeves to protect their children
The Nyaope Must Fall movement aims to eliminate drugs in Atteridgeville/Saulsville and Lotus Gardens.
The residents of Atteridgeville/Saulsville and Lotus Gardens will on 2 May, take a stand against drugs in a protest themed nyaope must fall.
The protesters will deliver a memorandum to the Atteridgeville police station.
Atteridgeville resident and protester Tebogo Mogashoa said drug abuse in the community had gotten out of hand.
“A few months ago, we decided to have residents’ meetings to to find solutions to the drug problem to secure a future for our children.”
He added that a new strategy was needed to defeat crime and drug usage.
“Something drastic needs to be done. The Tshwane metro have had a few awareness programmes but that doesn’t help much.”
He said what was even more worrying was that nyaope was sold near the Atteridgeville police station.
“The situation is so bad that people have the guts to sell nyaope just outside the police station. We want the police to take action and not just arrest individuals they find in the street because we all know that in a few days, those people will be out in the street selling nyaope again,” he said.
Residents were not asking for but doing this to give their children a future, he added.
Mogashoa said the residents’ fight against drugs would continue after the march.
“The metro police have given us the go ahead for next week, and the Atteridgeville police are also aware of the march. We will be joined by councillors and Atteridgeville Community Policing Forum members.”
Atteridgeville police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said he was not aware of the protest.
