Case postponed against man involved in shootout with police
The case against a man involved in a shootout with police continues.
The case against the survivor of the shootout with the police last week, has been postponed to Thursday.
The man, and an accomplice believed to be his brother, was involved in a high speed chase with the police which ended with the fatal shooting of the accomplice after he made a wrong turn into a cul-de-sac on Friday afternoon.
The man appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, and his case was postponed to Thursday, 5 May, confirmed the Silverton police.
Spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the man would answer to a number of charges.
“He faces three, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of illegal substances and attempted murder,” Sepato said.
His accomplice and driver was fatally wounded in the shootout and medics declared him dead on arrival in hospital, .
“The two men [raised suspicion when they] sped past a police vehicle in Simon Vermooten Road, Meyerspark,” Sepato said adding the police had immediately given chase.
The speeding white VW Polo then made a right turn into Bush Road followed by another into Stellanie Street attempting to evade police.
“Soon they realised this was a cul-de-sac, and reversed. Realising they were cornered, the men opened fire,” said Sepato.
“The police retaliated and the driver was wounded while the passenger was arrested.
Sepato said a revolver, dagga, and bullets were found inside the vehicle.
“We have strong reason to believe the couple are related,” said Sepato.
