Residents don’t have money to fix the blocked sewer

Residents can no longer cope with the stinking sewer.

The residents of Mamelodi West Section B3 have accused the Tshwane metro of neglecting them after it failed to repair a stinky sewer which has been spilling excrement for more than two months.

They say they wanted the metro to repair the sewer without asking them money.

Resident, Lucas Mabunda said residents reported the blocked sewer five times to the metro but nothing had been done to date.

“We [residents] are forced to keep our windows closed at all times because of the bad smell,” said Mabunda.

“We no longer enjoy our meals because of the bad smell and we were shocked to hear that the metro charges R10 000 to unblock sewers,” said Mabunda.

Another resident, Sam Chauke (80), said enough was enough.

“The stench has destroyed our quality of life… we [residents] cannot even stand outside our homes or sit in the garden to enjoy our meals,” said Chauke.

“When it rains, our streets are flooded by the stinking water. There’s nowhere to walk.”

He said fighting and protesting was the last thing on the residents minds.

“We are no longer enjoying our freedom in our own houses,” he said.

Ward 67 councillor, Dorcus Mathe, said she was aware of the problem and had reported it to the metro.

She said people in the squatter camp sometimes used sewer and drains as rubbish bins throwing in their litter which caused the blockages.

“The metro is working on repairing the problem,” said Mathe.
