Child smuggling ‘scary new trend’
The SAPS has urged parents to be extra cautious with flyers circulating on social media about child smuggling as the information is often false.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has distanced itself from flyers circulating on the social media warning about a “scary new trend”.
The flyer, purportedly authored by the SAPS warns parents about child smugglers who offer drug addicts money to help kidnap school-children.
“We appeal to residents not to panic and take extra precautions when dealing with such false information,” said the SAPS.
The SAPS said it urged people to refrain from circulating false messages aimed at causing alarm and citing it as the distributor of the bogus messages.
“We also urge parents to take care of their children and know their whereabouts at all times,” said the SAPS.
The SAPS said people addicted to drugs could be referred to a rehabilitation centre for help.
