Four arrested as Centurion residents fight crime
With the help of an app, residents apprehended four burglars in Centurion on Monday.
Four burglars were arrested by Centurion residents in the early hours of Monday morning after an alert was sent out on the social messaging app, Telegram.
Centurion Concerned Citizens spokesperson Hannes du Buisson said the CCC had established anti-crime groups on Telegram for each suburb.
He said just before 01:00, someone called to report banging sounds at Rawson properties in Rooihuiskraal North and suspected it was a break-in.
“We [the CCC] sent out the alert to all reaction channels.”
“Monitor Net, Copwatch, Scorpion Risk and other reaction members and patrollers were dispatched to catch the burglars, who were trying to jump over the wall at the time in an attempt to escape after firing shots.”
With the help of the residents, four of the five robbers were apprehended. No one was injured in the shooting.
“We also recovered their getaway vehicle, a white Volkswagen Golf. The four were taken to the Wierdabrug police station,” said Du Buisson.
He encouraged Centurion residents to join Telegram, which is similar to WhatsApp, to receive alerts of crimes in their area.
“Telegram is an alternative to Zello, which we have been using to report crimes. We recommend that residents join Telegram so they can easily report any suspicious activities in their area.”
“In this case, the community worked together very effectively.”
