VIDEO: Man shot after planning to shoot police
Lyttelton police shot a man in the leg when he cocked his gun to shoot at them.
Lyttelton police arrested a notorious house robber on Monday morning, believed to have been responsible for various house break-ins in Von Willich Avenue.
Police officers shot the man in the leg just as he cocked his gun to fire at them.
Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the shooting occurred during an early morning patrol.
“We [the police] have known about this man and his accomplice for some time and have been trying to catch them,” he said.
“We organised for our officers to patrol Von Willich Avenue, and Rabie and Hall streets, where he was most active.”
Gumbu said when the man, who was with his accomplice at the time, spotted the police, he turned his back to them and cocked his firearm.
His accomplice, who was armed with a knife, ran off.
The officers reacted and shot the man in his left leg. He fell to the ground and dropped his firearm.
Tshwane emergency services were called in to assess him, and he was taken to hospital under police guard.
His accomplice is still at large.
Gumbu praised the efforts of the officers in apprehending the wanted criminal.
He called on anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour to phone the police to report what they saw.
It is not clear what the man will be charged with.
