Outrage over shaken baby
The owners of the school, said they could not say too much as the investigation was ongoing.
A social media storm erupted this week after a video surfaced of a baby being shaken at a daycare centre in Doringkloof, Centurion.
The video, taken by a staff member at Die Baba Byekorf daycare, shows what appears to be a child carer shaking a baby in an attempt to get him to go to sleep.
The authenticity of the video is yet to be verified, but the staffer has since resigned.
The parents of the baby, Werner and Tarina Human, said they were “shocked and outraged” when shown the footage.
It appeared their seven-month-old son was being shaken in his baby bouncer to get him to calm down.
“It is unbelievable. At first I couldn’t comprehend what I was actually seeing,” said Werner.
“That feeling of disbelief was soon followed by sheer anger that my son was treated that way and that a school that always presented itself so well would not tell us about it.”
Werner said he rushed his son to ICU to have him assessed.
“We were so scared that he might have suffered brain damage or that he might have long-term damage. Luckily he was not injured.”
The owners of the school, Marius and Marisa van Rooyen, said they could not say too much as the investigation was ongoing.
“We have received multiple calls from people saying there were more videos on social media that were filmed on the same day,” said Marius.
“We have not seen anything for ourselves, and we are not in possession of any other videos except our own CCTV footage. We have not sorted through all the footage, but will inform the parents at the school first of any incident, before we speak to the media.”
Werner said he and his wife were considering all their options.
“This is a very delicate matter, and we don’t want to rush into anything. We heard there were other videos as well, and will consider our next step based on any evidence we get.”
